Our Maple Story
In 2002, when we met in high school, we never imagined that we would become sugarmakers. After school, Alan became a builder and started his own construction company, Better Construction LLC, and I went on to become an elementary school teacher.
We got married in 2008 and quickly started a family. Aliza was born in 2009. Austin and Bailey “the twins” were born in 2011. Life was busy raising 3 young kids!
Maple…In 2008, Alan began helping a sugarmaker on nights and weekends. He was quickly hooked and his dream of owning his own sugarbush and sugarhouse was born. After years of helping other sugarmakers, tapping trees and selling the sap, in 2018, we were finally able to purchase our very own sugarbush. Alan was confident and sure but I was scared to death!
We purchased 60 beautiful acres on Ober Hill in Johnson, with lots of sugaring history. The land had sat dormant with an old dilapidated sugar house on it for many years. Alan saw the potential and started brainstorming. The plan… to take down the old sugarhouse, paying respects to all the history it held, and constructing a new sugarhouse in its place.
After months and months of work McKnight Family Maple was born in 2020!
McKnight Family Maple has evolved since 2020 when it was established and the sugarhouse has seen several additions since that first year when we when we only produced and sold maple syrup. Today, we produce and sell maple syrup and several other maple products as well as host an annual Maple Open House Weekend event.
Today, we have approximately 18,000 taps spread out over 6 properties that we own or lease.
